Apt is the capital of Pays d’Apt, situated in the Luberon, a richly colourful region with a diversity of landscapes, ranging from quaint picturesque villages which dote the area with a unique charm, to majestic trodden footpaths winding through ochre mines. These unique landscapes create a rich palette of reds and yellows, which is one of the most beautiful and sought after wonders in Provence.
Located at 288 meters above sea level in the heart of Provence and the Luberon, this Provençal capital is known for its culinary delights, picturesque village and rich cultural heritage. The Roman « Apta Julia » is almost entirely pedestrian, and is perfect for quiet strolls and discovering local treasures such as the basilica, markets and museums.
Of special note: the ochre massif, easily accessible by well marked paths beginning notably in Apt, is one of the oldest and largest in the world. Additionally, the Luberon Regional Nature Park (167 676 ha encompassing 77 towns) was recognized by UNESCO in 1977 as a biosphere reserve, due to its exceptional variety of flora and fauna.

Don’t miss:

  • The Sainte-Anne Cathedral

The Sainte-Anne Cathedral is one of the oldest basilica/cathedrals in Provence. Originally built on Merovingian crypts, the cathedral’s architecture has undergone many changes over time. In the 17th century, a chapel was built in honour of Anne of Austria, who had come to Apt on a pilgrimage to thank Sainte Anne for the birth of Louis XIV.
In addition, the basilica houses the reliquaries of the Holy Patroness of the church as well as several of her treasures, including priest’s robes, Saint Delphine’s book of hours and her enamel reliquaries.

  • The bridge « Pont Julien »

The Pont Julien is a three ached Roman bridge built more that 2,000 years ago on the « Via Domitia » across the Cavalon (the river flowing beneath the Sainte Anne Hotel). It is one of the best preserved bridges in Provence, having admirably resisted averse weather conditions and the floods of the Cavalon throughout the ages.

  • Apt is known as Provence’s capital of savours. Its markets are a veritable institution in Apt, taking place every Saturday morning since the 12th century, throughout the town’s long maze of winding, narrow streets. More than 300 vendors await you, to enthral your senses with an explosion of colours and savours.
Apt is also known for its production of crystallized fruits. This crystallization process (a technique replacing the water in the fruit with sugar) is one of the oldest methods for preserving fruits. This generational know-how has made Apt famous the world over.
Don’t forget to visit the olive oil stands, as well as those offering truffles, honey and varieties of goat cheese to thrill your taste buds…not to mention the lavender, and soaps with typical Provençal fragrances…

Whether you’re travelling by foot, bicycle or car, numerous itineraries have their starting point in Apt.
Don’t hesitate to discover the Ochres by bicycle, following the 51 km marked path through the heart of the ochre massif (Green signposts towards Apt/ Gargas/ Roussillon/ Villars/ Rustrel; ochre signposts towards Apt/ Rustrel/ Villars/ Roussillon/ Gargas). The Cavalon biking trail (an 18 km marked, secure path), is also a magnificent route following the Cavalon river, which incidentally also flows right past the Sainte Anne Hotel.
Apt is also well-known amongst hiking enthusiasts as a starting point for a multitude of paths for exploring the region (hiking itineraries are public trails, with signposts indicating the altitudes and names of the areas crossed, providing the markers necessary for making the hike a pleasant experience for all).
Ideal for relaxing as a family, the Apt Lake offers a fishing area and a zone designated for navigating. You will find a sports fitness trail, a playground, tennis courts, mountain bike circuits, and areas for petanque and volleyball. You can also gather the family for a relaxing picnic under the trees.
In the summertime, numerous activities are organized for all ages and levels of proficiency, such as kayaking, climbing, windsurfing and pedal boat rental.
